South Africa | Tax Reference Number logic and validation

The system has an automatic validation check within the Tax Reference Number field on the Employee Tax profile screen based on the SARS Modulus check.

The Tax Reference Number would be accepted if the number starts with 0,1,2,3 or 9.

The field on the system would validate the last number based on the formula above by adding the sum of each line item calculation to the total.

In the above example the final digit of total is not greater than zero, which results in the check digit to be equal to 0 and the number is then valid and accepted.

As second example below highlights the formula where the last check digit is greater than zero.

The system defined validation logic will trigger an error if a Tax Reference Number does not pass the above logic and display the error as below.
