South Africa: How do I exclude employees from contributing to the UIF?

All South African companies can be set to be exempted from contributing to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) for various reasons as set out by Government Gazette.

Companies can be exempt from contributing to the UIF for the following reasons:
  1. National or Provincial sphere of government
  2. Employees receives pension payments only
  3. Temporary employees (less than 24 hours per month)
  4. Municipality with certificate of exemption

Company level configuration

There is no company level configuration, where a company can be exempt from contributing to the UIF.

Employee level configuration

If employees are also excluded from contributing to the UIF, for the above-mentioned exemption reasons, the reason must be recorded on the affected employee records, i.e. on the UIF exemption reason field under the Exemptions and Other tab on their Basic Profile screen.

Alternatively, this can be done via the Bulk Actions screen using the Basic Profile or Update Employee Information action types.
